Minutes – Faculty Professional Development Committee
Wednesday, September 9, 2020

Members Present:  Diane Jones, Ruby Payne, Mariza Martinez, Julian Martinez, Tina Mendoza, Chris Taylor, Wendy Berry, Leslie Minor

Members Absent: none

Guests: none

Approval of the Minutes: Minutes from the 5/13/20 meeting were reviewed for information only since the PDC committee has now become a Faculty only PDC. We no longer have Tiffany Rowden to take minutes so Diane asked if someone would volunteer to take minutes beginning in October.

Fall Faculty PDC Meeting Schedule
The Faculty PDC meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month from 12:10 to 1:00pm. Diane surveyed the committee members, and everyone is able to attend at this time. It was noted that Wendy will join the meetings a little late due to her class schedule. The fall semester meetings will be 10/14/20, 11/11/20 and 12/9/20.

Faculty PDC Charter
Diane sent out a draft charter prior to the meeting. The committee members reviewed the draft charter. Diane will send it out again via email for any other changes. If there are none, then she will forward it to the Academic Senate for approval.

January Inservice Schedule
Diane sent out the Jan. 2020 inservice schedule for information. Ruby reminded the committee that the first Thursday and Friday need to be free of mandatory meetings to allow Faculty the opportunity to use their flex time. Diane suggested that the first Thursday and Friday be offered remotely, regardless of whether the college is back to normal operations. Diane mentioned that she thought a Town Hall meeting would be a good addition to the schedule on the first Thursday. Julian said he would like to see Nicole Avina conduct a session on Voice Thread which is a way to hold discussions through video. Tina mentioned wanting more training on technology such as Flip Grid or other tools to use in Canvas. Diane said another faculty member had suggested a session on creating instructional videos for Canvas and other Canvas tips and tricks. Mariza mentioned the distance education videos Nicole has already created are very helpful. Ruby reminded the committee that we need to be careful not to overload Nicole with sessions and if classified are still on a four-day work week, we cannot ask them to run sessions on Friday. Leslie suggested a session on student engagement. Diane will add these suggested sessions into the draft January schedule and email it out to the committee.

Other
Leslie reminded the committee that the Lunch and Learn fall series of workshops are beginning on September 10, 2020. All faculty are invited, and the workshops are flex eligible. She will send out the remaining schedule once it has been finalized. Mariza mentioned that some of the technology sessions could be offered as a Brown Bag meetings throughout the semester. Diane thanked everyone for their help and flexibility with the meeting due to the power outage.

Next meeting – Wednesday, October 14, 2020 Zoom meeting ID: 996 2391 7997
