III.                DISCUSSION

1.            CORs that are five years or older

The list of CORS that are five years or older was handed out again to each Curriculum member. The courses were color coded to show which have been updated and approved by Curriculum, updated but not yet approved by Curriculum, or inactivated. Out of 206 courses on the list, 22 had been updated or inactivated. Courses that need to be inactivated as they haven’t been taught or there are no plans to

Curriculum and General Education Committee Agenda December 8, 2014

teach should be dealt with and inactivated first. Secondly, courses that will have the biggest impact on programs should be dealt with next. Division Chairs need to take the list back to their divisions to discuss a timeline for the CORs to be updated in the spring. The Curriculum and General Education committee has five meetings left for the year, and the CORs need to be spread out evenly, so the committee isn’t dealing with all the courses in the May meeting. When CORs are requested from the Curriculum Technician, the supplemental data table will be included as well as suggested updates to things like the coding as well as the textbook. V. Jacobi spoke about the ILS courses in the Learning Support division. She said that they are waiting for a new director of the TIL to be hired before the ILS courses are updated.

The director should start by March, and the CORS are expected in April or May. S. Eastman spoke about the dental hygiene courses. She expects them to be ready for the February Curriculum and General Education meeting. V. Jacobi said that she will be asking for a timeline from the division chairs on the other CORs.

Jacobi said SLO/ASC will work like the Tech Review for SLOs.

B.               SLOs

  1. ASTR 1511       Introduction to Astronomy with Lab

This item will not be discussed.

C.               High Unit Count Course Values

Questions were asked about whether this form should be used when creating new courses or if previously approved courses would need to be looked at and justified. Questions were also asked regarding whether courses should be discussed regardless of C-ID approval. If a course was C-ID approved over the specified unit value, do those still need to be discussed? Discussion then continued as it was pointed out that most of our courses are set at the minimum value under the Carnegie unit range. For example, a three unit lecture course can be 48-51 hours, and the majority of our courses are set at the minimum or in this example, 48 hours. So courses could include more hours while maintaining a lower unit value.

B.         Certificate Update

  1. Certificate of Achievement: Energy Technology Field Tech Certificate

It was noted that the PSLOs for this certificate were very vague and need to be edited. S. Eveland asked whether or not the Curriculum and General Education committee was the group that would vote on and approve SLOs. T. Thompson also asked if it was mandated that the SLOs come before a program or course is developed. V. Jacobi said she would bring the statue from the Department of Education regarding how SLOs and programs should be created. The question was asked if the SLO/ASC committee should review the SLOs first, or Access for new programs/certificates, or if it should be sent to the division for review. K. Bandy said she would be fine with the Curriculum & General Education committee making suggestions for revisions to the SLOs but not approving them. A discussion item for the next Curriculum & General Education meeting will be added regarding SLOs and the role of the Curriculum & General Education committee. Further SLO conversation was tabled until then. On a motion by B. Devine, seconded by K. Bandy, and unanimously

V.                  DISCUSSION ITEMS

A.                  High Unit Count Course Values

This item was tabled due to time constraints.

B.                  Review of the Area of Emphasis: Communication

  1. Jacobi presented a PowerPoint presentation about the alignment of PSLOs and course SLOs using the Area of Emphasis: Communication as an example. The presentation was an example of one way to do a comprehensive program review. It uses the alignment of SLOs to ask if students are getting everything they need from the degree by taking the courses that are included in that degree. Discussion also involved the lack of a 2000 level course in the degree. G. Golling asked if it was common for a Communication degree not to include a 2000 level course. V. Jacobi stated that this area of emphasis isn’t a degree in Communication Studies so it is difficult to do a direct comparison. T. Thompson shared the history behind the Area of Emphasis: Communication. Taft College use to offer a Liberal Arts degree which most students selected, and when that was no longer offered, most students then selected Social Science, and when that option was no longer offered, they moved to Area of Emphasis: Communication. This is the degree that most students graduate with.

I.                    WELCOME

Bill Devine & Karen Ziegler were welcomed as new Curriculum and General Education members

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: from the May 12, 2014 Curriculum & General Education Committee meeting

III.                RATIFICATION OF COSC 1800 & 1860 FOR DISTANCE LEARNING

This is on the agenda as an informational item. These courses were voted on and approved during the summer via email.

IV.                DISCUSSION ITEMS

1.   Courses requiring updates

A list of CORs that were last updated in 2009 or earlier was distributed to each Division Chair. K. Carlson asked what to do with very old courses that haven’t been taught in a long time. V. Jacobi recommended inactivating them now, and if the courses need to come back at a later date, to revise them at that time. V. Jacobi also recommended that if a course has a C-ID descriptor, to look at that when revising a course. With nine curriculum meetings, discussion revolved around how to manage the work load. Several recommendations were given such as online discussion of Curriculum items, and approval of course inactivations and distance learning approvals via email.

Curriculum and General Education Committee Agenda August 22, 2014

On a motion by G. Golling, seconded by K. Carlson, and unanimously carried, inactivation and distance learning requests will be voted on via email after they go through Tech Review.

Everyone will need to respond to the email.

2.   New ADTs

  1. Jacobi mentioned the following degrees that each division should look into: Elementary Education, Chemistry, Biology, Kinesiology, Physics, Economics, and Spanish

3.   SLO/ASC to report to Curriculum monthly

Since SLO/ASC is Academic Senate committee, SLO/ASC should report back to the Academic Senate. M. Williams mentioned that during his time at the Curriculum Institute he was impressed with the level of discussion occurring on different campuses and would like to see more reporting out of committees to Curriculum.

4.   Meeting Day/Time

Several meeting day/time options were discussed including moving the meeting to Fridays in order to have a two (2) hour time block. Now that course inactivations and distance learning will be approved via email, the meeting time of C&GE will be extended by thirty (30) minutes every month. Curriculum & General Education will continue to meet every second Monday of the month, but the revised time is 12:10-1:30pm.
