AGENDA

  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: From the November 11, 2015 Curriculum & General Education meeting

On a motion by S. Eveland, seconded by G. Golling, and unanimously carried, the minutes from the November 11, 2015 Curriculum and General Education committee meeting were approved.

  1. CONSENT ITEMS:

Course Inactivations:

BIOL       2204       Introduction to Vertebrate Zoology

BIOL       2280       Biotechnology

CHEM    2108       Organic Chemistry

CHEM    2109       Organic Chemistry Laboratory

Course Revisions:

GEOG    1510       Physical Geography

On a motion by B. Devine, seconded by J. Rangel-Escobedo, and unanimously carried, the consent items were approved to move forward to the January 13, 2016 District Board meeting.

III.           NEW BUSINESS ITEMS:

WKEX    1514       General Education Work Experience

On a motion by S. Eveland, seconded by B. Devine and unanimously carried, the course update to WKEX 1514 was approved to move forward to the January 13, 2016 District Board meeting.

  1. DISCUSSION ITEMS:

  1. Programs and Courses Approval Timeline

Changes were made but not discussed. Each division was provided lists of the CORs that need review this year as well as a list of programs that have been affected by curriculum changes. Divisions were also given the courses that need C-ID updating. Discussion was had regarding when programs should be submitted. It was asked if programs should be submitted every time a course is inactivated or changed, but due to the Chancellor’s office long approval time table, it is more efficient to look at programs and make any necessary course changes at once. The curriculum timeline was provided as there are only four Curriculum and General Education meetings left in this academic year where course and programs will be reviewed.

  1. STATUS UPDATE FROM DIVISIONS
  2. Jacobi updated the committee on various curriculum matters being discusses across the campus. Chris Flachmann may report out during the January in-service Curriculum and General Education meeting regarding incarcerated students and the work being done. Dual enrollment is being discussed in the Academic Senate. A Faculty Inquiry Group was held a few weeks ago to discuss the CSU General Education. There is interest in continued work in this area, but probably won’t happen in the Spring semester. A question was asked about the development of a noncredit welding course, and Tori is taking that discussion back to the division. No other divisions reported out.

On a motion by K. Bandy, seconded by J. Rangel-Escobedo, and with V. Jacobi as articulation officer opposed, the course update to BIOL 2203 was approved to move forward to the December 9, 2015 District Board meeting.

On a motion by J. Rangel-Escobedo, seconded by K. Carlson, and opposed by K. Bandy, the removal of the BIOL 2203 from the local, Gen-Ed Breadth, and IGETC transfer patterns was approved to move forward to the December 9, 2015 District Board meeting.

  1. DISCUSSION ITEMS:

  1. Approval of SLO Process
  2. Jacobi presented two options and also asked the group for any other ideas. The first option is to have a similar process as textbook changes. A separate form would be created as well as a separate approval process. Another option would be to include the SLOs on the Curriculum agenda as a consent item.

As courses are revised on the five year cycle, SLOs are looked at and changes are made then. It was discussed that a form would be created for SLO changes outside of the five year review cycle. This discussion will continue within division chairs and may come back to the Curriculum committee.

  1. AP 4021 Program Discontinuation Procedure

No new language was submitted. This item will remain on the agenda.

  1. Stats Pathway
  2. Jacobi presented that statewide, pathways are being developed for non-STEM majors to complete algebra to statistics in two semesters instead of three semesters. Vicki has been forwarding the correspondence to Greg Golling, Diane Jones, and Brian Jean. As Brian researches this, he may present this information to the group in the future.

    1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: From the September 14, 2015 Curriculum & General Education meeting

On a motion by B. Devine, seconded by K. Bandy, and unanimously carried, the minutes from the

September 14, 2015 Curriculum and General Education meeting were approved.

    1. CONSENT ITEMS:

    1. PSYC      2205       Introduction to Research Methods in the Social Sciences

    1. Rewording of all prerequisites with ‘two years of high school algebra’ to ‘the equivalent to Math 1060.’ This would affect the following courses: MATH 1500, 1520, 1530, 1540, and STAT 1510

On a motion by B. Devine, seconded by G. Golling, and unanimously carried, the consent items were

approved to move forward to the November 11, 2015 District Board meeting.

    III.           NEW BUSINESS ITEMS:

    Course Updates

    1. MATH   1530       Trigonometry

Copies of the section improvement plans for MATH 1530 from eLumen were provided for the group. Joy Reynolds was complimented on her work on the section improvement plan. Other suggestions to increase student success in this course were also discussed including tutoring and a Math Jam session. On a motion by K. Bandy, seconded by B. Devine, and unanimously carried, the course update to MATH 1530 was approved to move forward to the November 11, 2015 District Board meeting.

    1. DISCUSSION ITEMS:

    1. AP 4021 Program Discontinuation Procedure

The current procedure for program discontinuation doesn’t clearly outline the procedure for

discontinuation of duplicate programs. With the creation of Associate Degrees for Transfer, several of the AA/AS degrees are now duplicated. A suggestion for a ‘fast track’ for discontinuation of duplicated programs was made. With the English faculty interested in discontinuing the AA in English, the procedure may need to be revised. It was agreed that the English division chair would use the current procedure and report back any roadblocks that are experienced. The rest of the group will review the current procedure and send any language revisions to Danielle before the next Curriculum and General Education meeting. This item will be on the next Curriculum and General Education agenda and any revisions will be sent to the Academic Senate.

    1. Distance Learning

Distance Learning Coordinator Dan Hall provided handouts to the group which included responses from other distance learning coordinators across the state regarding two topics: the approval process for distance education courses and lab courses approved for distance education. Our current approval form for distance learning courses was discussed. The current form focuses on the instructor who will be teaching the course rather than focusing on the course content. Responses from the other distance learning coordinators regarding lab hours taught online were mostly that they do not offer lab hours online, and these courses are usually hybrids with the lecture portion online, but students meet face to face for the lab hours. The creation of a Distance Learning committee will be discussed in Academic Senate. This committee may create a distance education plan, as well as policy and procedures, while focusing on ACCJC standards as related to distance education. Whether or not this is initially a taskforce or a full committee will be discussed in Academic Senate.

    1. Policy Change for Hours and Units Calculations for Credit Courses from the Chancellor’s office

The new category of ‘activities’ was pointed out on the document, and it was mentioned that this may advantageous in the future with the continued use of the flipped classroom. We do follow the guidelines outlined in the document, and at this time this is an informational item.

Guests: Dan Hall and Geoffrey Dyer

    AGENDA
    I. Approval of Minutes: From the May 11, 2015 Curriculum & General Education meeting
On a motion by K. Bandy, seconded by K. Carlson, and unanimously carried, the minutes from the May 11, 2015 Curriculum and General Education meeting were approved.

II. What we did last year:
The Curriculum & General Education Committee approved the following curriculum in 14-15:
    New Courses: 5
    Course Revisions: 68
    Course Inactivations: 50
    Distance Learning Requests: 5
    New Programs: 3
    Program Revisions: 16
    Program Inactivations (local certificates): 2
    Total: 149

    III. Goals for this year:
    A. Consent Agenda and Definitions
Vicki and Danielle introduced the idea of using a consent agenda which is more consistent with the District Board meeting agenda. A list of definitions of what items would be on the consent agenda vs the new business agenda was handed out. It was discussed that items could be removed from the consent agenda and voted on them individually or items could be discussed and stay on the consent agenda to be voted on. On a motion by S. Eveland, seconded by B. Devine, and unanimously approved the use of the consent agenda.

    B. List of Curriculum Items for 2015-16
A list of curriculum discussion items was made which included: Areas of Emphasis, future of Local Degrees,
Inmate population, General Education, Basic Skills, Distance Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Degrees,
Non-credit and Adult Education, Bachelor’s Degrees, and Stand-alones. The hope is, with the use of a consent agenda, more time will be devoted to discussion items. Items will appear on the agenda every month. These will roll over from one meeting to the next until the item is fully discussed. Discussion also included the interconnectivity of many of these items and that a discussion of one item may lead to other items being discussed.

    C. Prioritization
It was agreed to start with Distance Learning in the next Curriculum and General Education meeting. This will include correspondence education and the issue of labs/modality.

IV. Deadline for the first Technical Review Committee is Monday, August 31st by 4:00pm.
