2.        Senate discussion regarding draft CTE experience examples/criteria                      DISC/ACTION

This will go to Board after approved by Senate since it’s a mutually agreed upon document. After approval, it should be available on the Senate and HR websites and be updated on an annual review cycle.

3.        Environmental Health and Safety Proposal-Terry Davis                                        DISC/ACTION

Terry Davis introduced himself, sharing he worked for Chevron for 32 years as an Environmental Engineer/Environmental Scientist, doing a lot of health and safety related work. In 2018, he came to TC and began teaching energy courses. Terry provided a handout on Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), and what a potential EHS program might look like. The proposed program would be combined, and a lot more comprehensive than existing programs. Terry explained most companies have EH&S. Terry shared Bakersfield College has Industrial and Environmental options for students, but not EHS. Terry has spoken with others in the field and industry about the potential EHS program, and there is excitement and a willingness to support the program with hiring, internships, etc. The structure would include certificate, AA/AS degree, and transfer options, and would include a combination of energy and safety courses, and some sciences. Terry said it would be beneficial to offer any classes online, as possible. In his handout, Terry highlighted seven or so “essential courses” on the course list by bolding those courses. Terry recommended updating BIOL 1513 to an Intro to Environmental Science course or creating a new course for this. Terry also recommended another new course be created pertaining to endangered species regulation and protection. Terry shared there is a lot of money for consulting and endangered species work. The proposed EHS program would better prepare students and is very valuable to an employer. Terry is willing to work on this project and do what it takes to accomplish it. Help is needed with TC curriculum process, and next steps. The committee discussed pulling together an advisory committee, discussing with faculty and the division, and having Norberto send new program documents/paperwork to Terry so it can be completed and then shared with the advisory committee. The proposed program would absorb current OSH—maybe roll it in with certificate program first, and then discontinue others. It would also replace Energy Technology. Terry is very confident the program can be wildly successful.

Motion to recommend the EHS program be considered for next steps and potential approval: Darcy Bogle

Second: Kristi Richards

Motion passed.
