MINUTES

Friday, January 25, 2013

9 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Cougar Room

Present: Jennifer Altenhoffel, Brandy Cramer, Geoffrey Dyer, Vicki Herder Michelle Oja, David Reynolds, David Layne

Absent: Joe’ll Chaidez

  1. Documentation From Divisions – Course and Program Improvement
  • Vicki discussed the ACCJC standards and the necessity of documentation showing course and program improvements made across the institution. Currently faculty have been using eLumen to document changes or improvements to their courses in Section Improvement Plans. The committee discussed the difference between using eLumen as the repository for documentation as opposed to other options such as agendas, meeting minutes, FIG notes and emails. It was decided that a centralized repository (a shared drive) would be a great way to share and document discussions that take place as well as provide a location to upload and download forms or other tools. eLumen will still be used to document SIPs and CIPs, and the shared drive would be a place to house the back up for those plans.
  1. Mapping SLOs
  • The eLumen mapping tool will be used to map course SLOs to program SLOs. This tool will help to point out discrepancies between course SLOs and program SLOs. It will also provide reporting features that aggregate course SLOs and program SLOs.
  1. Staff Development

  • Faculty training for Authentic Assessment will be provided spring 2013. A date has not been set yet.

1

  1. Resources on SLO Website
  • The updated SLO How to Guide was handed out for review. The updated version is available on the TC website and will be included in the adjunct faculty binder.

MINUTES

Friday, April 19, 2013

9 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Counseling Conference Room

Present: Jennifer Altenhoffel, Brandy Cramer, Geoffrey Dyer, Vicki Herder Michelle Oja, David Reynolds, David Layne

Absent: Joe’ll Chaidez

  1. Minutes from March 15, 2013 – Annual Report
  • Went over the changes made to the report before submission.
  • Discussed integrity, honesty, and being accountable for the correct numbers. Discussed how other schools are generating their numbers and how eLumen has helped TC.
  • Discussed Westec and how the numbers are improving in SLO assessment – mainly in Court Reporting
  • Discussed the challenges with Westec and assessment of SLOs.
    • Westec students are about 10,000. The way students are entered into Banner is a problem. Working on assessments is a challenge when the data upload is not accurate. How do we assess the classes that are being offered but are not in the data upload? For instance the Passport class is offered many times throughout the semester, but is not in eLumen because of the issues with Banner and the data upload process. It is hopeful that once the new VP arrives a process can be developed.
  • Invite Bill and Randy from Westec to join SLOASC.
  • If we are asked by the Commission we will explain to them why Westec SLOs are not being fully assessed.
  1. Mapping SLOs – Status Update from Divisions
  • Vicki gave a brief summary why we need to map SLOs to PSLOs and ISLOs and how it works.
  • Vicki explained how the mapping tool will help in reporting assessment scores at the program level.
  • The English department has started mapping their SLOs.  Vicki has met with the following program leads to explain the mapping process:
    • Kanoe Bandy
    • Kamala Carlson
    • Jennifer Altenhofel
    • Michelle Oja
    • Sonja Swenson
    • Becky Roth
    • Stacey Eastman
  • All mapping should be completed by June 30, 2013.
  • All fall 2012 and spring 2013 SLO assessment should be completed by June 30, 2013.
  1. Mission Statement for the SLO Webpage
  • Vicki gave a brief summary on the changes to the SLO webpage. Page 1 – Mission statement, Page 2 – Quick Links and Resources, Page 3 – SLOs.
  • A finalized version of the SLO webpage mission statement was approved.

“The Student Learning Outcomes team assists faculty and staff in the development of student learning outcomes and effective authentic assessment and analysis of data with thoughtful considered improvements to courses, programs, and services with a culture of evidence and on-going dialogue. The SLO team values the culture of inquiry, integrity of the data, and the academic freedom of faculty to determine the best method for student learning. The SLO team houses and coordinates the assessment efforts as described by each unit, division, program, service, and course area.”

  1. COR for Course Improvement – Accreditation Evidence
  • Vicki asked if a COR could be interpreted as evidence for course improvement.
  • Geoffrey stated that the ACCJC wants to see improvement of courses by SLO assessment.
  • Substantive change is a factor; need for evidence to show change because of SLO assessment.
  • This item will be added to the next meeting agenda for further discussion and clarification.
  1. Program Review Focus – Program Level Instead of Course Level
  • The reasons why a June 30th deadline is necessary:
    • Program reports can be generated in July and August.
    • Packets with all accumulated data can be given out to program leads during fall inservice.
    • A program review summary can be written using fall 2012 and spring 2013 SLO data.

  1. Other
  • Future agenda items:
    • COR for evidence of course improvement
    • Signature Assignment
    • Confirm meeting date and time for next year
