Special Meeting

Minutes
Friday, December 7, 2018
Counseling Center Conference Room
9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Present:  Paul Blake, Mike Jiles, James May,  and Terri Smith
Absent: Vicki Jacobi and Tina Mendoza

The committee held a special meeting to discuss spring inservice. During this inservice, there will be a presentation on Quantitative Reasoning. Quantitative Reasoning is the ISLO scheduled for campus wide assessment. Vicki will demonstrate a couple of methods for different disciplines to assess this. The “pendulum” demonstration was fairly popular with faculty so Vicki might use a similar demonstration.

Originally, there was going to be a fun activity that modeled the Jeopardy game. This activity is postponed. Instead, there will be an activity focusing on meta-majors.

Approval of Minutes of September 21, 2018 Meeting

Minutes are approved without changes.

Vicki opened the meeting with an overview of the goals set for the 18/19 year for those committee members that were not present at the last meeting.

Common Assessment for Quantitative Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning is the ISLO to be assessed this academic year. The math/science departments should not have a problem with assessing this. The other departments may have trouble. Vicki is going to develop a couple different shared/common assessments for departments to use. These will be embedded in eLumen.

Review and Finalize steps for Family Feud Game

  • Purpose – we need to hear the students’ voice. How disconnected are we from the students?
  • Create a series of questions for a family feud type exercise for faculty to participate in.
  • To be done during inservice
  • Severo has volunteered to be the host
  • Teri Smith has volunteered to be a judge and contribute to prizes
  • Forty questions should be developed
  • There will be 5 teams, and 4 games

Vicki read over some of the questions that we could use. Some questions will be used for fun, but most of the questions will be designed to identify a disconnect.

Planning: Fall Inservice- August 13 thru 17 (SLO Day is August 14th)
An area of focus during SLO Day will be General Education SLOs and embedding them into courses. Vicki listed some examples of how to merge the ISLOs and GE SLOs and how to assess. Vicki developed a matrix similar to the ISLO matrix for GE SLOs: Define, Assess, Review and Implement. Vicki will share this document with the Senate Council and the Senate of the Whole. Terri proposed an ISLO for Information Competency. Vicki will bring this to the Senate for discussion. Currently there is no process for creating a new ISLO.  Vicki reviewed the schedule of activities for SLO Day. There will be four breakout sessions from 8:30 to 10:00 and two breakout sessions from 10:15 to 12:00. At 1:10 there will be a general session in the library to discuss combining ISLOs and GE SLOs. From 2:30 to 4:00, shared discipline groups will meet to discuss assessing and defining GE SLOs. Those who still need to enter data in to eLumen will be able to do that between 2:30 and 4:00.

Senate Council Review of Computation ISLO
Current Version: Graduates should be able to solve problems involving data gathering and analysis, apply mathematical concepts, and use technology in the process.

Proposed change to Computation ISLO—fall 2018

Quantitative Reasoning

Students shall demonstrate the abilities to reason quantitatively, use computational skills, and explain and apply mathematical or quantitative reasoning concepts to solve problems.

Next Meeting: April 20, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Counseling Conference Room.

General Education SLOs and ISLOs Vicki led the discussion on GE SLOs and gave a brief history. The committee discussed the possibility of combining assessment efforts to cover both ISLO and GE SLOs. More discussion will be had in future meetings. This topic will be a subject for fall inservice activities.
Fall Inservice – August 13 thru 17 The committee agreed to have SLO Day on Tuesday August 14, 2018. Breakout sessions will be finalized prior to the end of this semester.
Course Sequencing – Majors Vicki listed the missing areas for course sequencing within majors. Brandy will check her files for those who turned in their forms. Vicki discussed the pathways to degrees that counselors put together that will be linked in the SmartCatalog.
Other The committee once again discussed the issue of English 1500 as a prerequisite and how faculty can ensure our students are writing at the level they need to when taking certain courses. A suggested solution is to build modules within Canvas (or another application) for students to use as a resource to help them through the writing process when taking courses such as History, Art History, and other other courses that require writing skills. The hope is to find funds to offer release time to faculty to “build” this resource. The hope is to have a unified resource that all faculty can use in order to maintain consistency in methodology. This discussion will continue in future meetings.
Next Meeting: March 16, 2018 from 8:10 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the Cafe Conference Room unless otherwise notified.
